WWII U.S. Marine, Guadalcanal Combat Veteran GroupingKnife, Bullion Insignia, Photo's, Paper, Fourragere
Great grouping to a seasoned, combat WWII Marine veteran. Below, I have included as much information as I know. You will get everything you see in the photos.
USMC Sgt. Pete Klapps. He was born in 1924 and enlisted in the USMC in 1939 when he was 15 years old. He served in 2/5 (hence his Fourragere) in the USA and was transferred to 2/7 (Third Marine Brigade, FMF, 1st Marine Division) shortly before embarking overseas in April 1942. He travelled on the U.S.S. Heywood to the South Pacific, I think Samoa, and then landed on Guadalcanal with the 2/7. He served in combat for the entire time as a corporal (special weapons platoon/mortars) and then was sent to Australia for R&R in 1943. When the Marines were looking for volunteers to go back stateside to train new marines in combat tactics, he volunteered and was sent back. He spent the rest of the war training marines as a Sgt. in Oceanside, CA.
The person I got this grouping from, got it straight from Sgt. Klapps. The following is information provided by the original owner.
"He told me that he used the little knife for many everyday things while on Guadalcanal. As for the USN shoulder board and the piece of metal, he told me that one day when they were in patrol, a USN plane was shot down and crashed in their vicinity. They ran to the plane to save the pilot but he was already dead. He took a piece of the plane and the man’s USN shoulder board which was in the plane. He meant to give it to the Navy but one thing led to another in combat and he ended up keeping it. The mimeographed letter from Gen. Barrett was given to them while on board the Heywood in preparation for landing in Samoa. The three USS Heywood press releases date from his time sailing to Samoa and Guadalcanal. The Japanese language guide for front line troops was given to them on Guadalcanal. The photos date from when he returned to the USA after Guadalcanal in 1943 and was given home leave. The Parris Island things date from when he was a recruit. The tongue in cheek indoctrination leaflet for Marines returning to the USA from overseas dating from October 1945 was made by a friend. We had a good laugh over that! Finally, the small torn out picture of Sgt. Lou Diamond was from the Leatherneck Magazine. He told me he trained on mortars under him prior to Guadalcanal and saw him on Guadalcanal a couple of times prior to Sgt. Diamond’s shipment back to the USA."
