    A wonderful collection of WW2 letters, correspondence, RARE US Army Air Corp WWII Collar Insignia Pin / Hat Badge, and Signaling Mirrors.
    312th AAF FLYING TRAINING DETACHMENT Squadron 107

    Called to active duty with Douglas O-38 and North American O-47 observation planes on 15 October 1940, the 107th was sent to DeRidder Army Air Base, Louisiana for unit training on 28 October 1940. For many years this airfield was simply called the Artillery Range Airport Camp.
    Large collection of letters mainly "sweetheart" letters sent to Wayne B Johannsen from his girlfriend but also some interesting correspondence from fellow servicemen. A letter was sent to Wayne regarding a solo flight. 1943 United States Army Air Corps Solo flight of BT - 9.
    A letter of special note is actually a letter from his father talking about the Aug 3rd, 1943 air disaster at St Louis. (SEE PHOTO)
    "Letter dated Aug 3rd St Louis Air Disaster. Wayne's father wrote him a letter
    Dated 3rd Aug 1943 - "Just a few lines, some accident at Lambert Field with the glider, 10 killed including Mayor William Becker"
    One stack of letters is still tied up and a second wrapped in brown paper... we were very tempted to open but thought we would leave that for the winning bidder!!
    Other pieces of ephemera also present.
    Wayne was stationed at the Cadet center in San Antonio Texas and later at Champaign in Illinois. Letters span from about 1941 - 1948
