    Description

    You are bidding on
    a very sentimental
    piece of "trench art" from the
    ITA
    LI
    AN
    campaign of World War II
    . Unfortunately I do not know too much about the provenance of this wooden box, but of course
    BARI
    (
    a port city on Italy's east coast
    ) was unexpectedly and devastatingly bombed by the
    Luftwaffe
    , AFTER it's capture by Allied forces
    . This attack occurred in
    December of 1943
    and wrecked havoc with scores of supply ships which were providing supplies to the Allied advance up the "boot" of Italy.
    Huge explosions
    and
    widespread destruction
    resulted from this raid....setting back the supply chain by almost 1 month. So, this piece of trench art was probably produce  in the weeks, or early months after the raid....
    in early 1944

    Wish I had more provenance of who made it and that soldier's rank and status and his more than likely, witness to this raid!
    You can see the size of the box from the tape measure in pic 2....and also the "nut" fastening the wooden handle may have been replaced....I only say this as it looks quite shiny....but who knows it could be original to the piece!
