    Description

    Hi,
Up for sale is a one of a kind, original U.S.N.A.S. Pearl Harbor Ashtray. Here is what information I was able to find regarding its possible background and age.
I was able to find a similar ashtray that was offered for sale at auction at Bonhams on Feb 13 2013 (https://www.bonhams.com/auctions/21082/lot/12/?category=list).  The similar ashtray was stamped with a date of 1945.  Auction estimates for 4 ashtrays of the same era ranged 0 - 00 in 2013.
The formation was taken from Wikipedia under "Ford Island":
"In 1917, the 6th Aero Squadron was created in Honolulu, with Captain John F. Currey as its commander. Currey chose Ford Island as the location for the new squadron and bought it from the John Papa ʻĪʻī land trust for 6,000, citing its access to water and winds as assets. When Currey was transferred to Washington, command of the squadron was given to Captain John B. Brooks and then Major Hugh J. Knerr, who built hangars and a runway. Early soldiers had to level the island, removing hills and boulders.
The Navy decided that a Hawaiian base was a necessity, considering the Army field at Ford Island an ideal candidate. N
aval Air Station Pearl Harbor, consisting of nine officers and fifty-five men, was commissioned on December 19, 1919.
The Navy replaced its PK, F5L, and H16 aircraft with newer models (see table below). In 1933 VP-8F arrived on station, and in 1935 the army bombers had become too large to be maintained and stored at Luke Field. Construction began on a new Army airfield, Hickam Army Airfield, named after pioneer U.S. Army Air Corps pilot Lieutenant Colonel Horace Meek Hickam.
In 1939, after three years of construction, Hickam Field opened. The Army transferred its operations there, leaving Luke Field under Navy control. The latter was renamed Naval Air Station Ford Island, and became the headquarters of Patrol Wing 2.
Ford Island was at the center of the attack on Pearl Harbor and on the U.S. Pacific Fleet by the Imperial Japanese fleet on December 7, 1941. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964, and as of 2011 the National Trust for Historic Preservation has listed the island as one of the United States' most-endangered historic sites."
Although I'm not an expert, based on the information above, I would date the ashtray to between 1920 and 1945. The ashtray is made of aluminum and measures just under 7 inches in diameter and sits 1 inch high, weighing approx 10 oz. The ashtray is inscribed with "C. E. Herbison, MACH. U.S.N." The ashtray has 3 rest points designed for cigars. There are minor marks on the underside and the ashtray shows normal ageing and discoloration.
This is truly a unique and collectable ashtray and the only one of its kind as far as I know. Be the one to snap up this rare historical beauty.  Once gone, that's it!
