Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES) ring commemorates the brave women who served during World War II. An oval synthetic sapphire blue spinel flashes cobalt blue in the light. An naval anchor and propeller emblem is set on top of the spinel and the word WAVES adorns the sides.
WAVES was a unit of the U.S. Naval Reserve formed during World War II after a nudge by Eleanor Roosevelt. The women from this branch served in secretarial and clerical functions after eight weeks of training at Bainbridge, Maryland.
Synthetic spinels were used extensively during the mid-century as they were much less expensive substitutions for costly rubies and sapphires.
