This EXTRAORDINARY 1996 Platinum LP Award of Purple Rain was made when Warner Brothers announced more than 13-million copies had been sold. It is now estimated that more than 25 million copies were sold prior to Prince's death. This 20 year old award is one of a few found in my father's collection after he passed away in January. He was the premier Gold & Platinum record awards contractor for every major record label company in America for nearly 50 years, and often over produced awards in the event more might be needed by the record company or the artists after the main order was sent out to radio stations and VIP's who helped promote the sales. There were also 8 X 10 glossy's with each of the awards of Prince on the cycle which was an iconic pose of the superstar. (LAST PHOTO in this listing) That, along with the Certificate of Authenticity comes with the award, which measures approximately 14" X 14" with glass frame.
I don't believe the few who may still have this from 20 years ago will be putting it up for sale. Bear in mind that these awards were NEVER available commercially, and never "SOLD" to anyone, , but were sent to radio stations or VIP's to commemorate the success of the album and as a way of thanking them from the record label.....in this case, Warner Brothers.
QUICK TRIVIA & FYI: 1) In 2007, Vanity Fair labeled Purple Rain as the best soundtrack of all time. 2) Tempo magazine named it the greatest alum of the 1980's. 3) The 1,000th issue of Entertainment Weekly dated July 4, 2008 listed Purple Rain at NUMBER ONE on their list of the top 100 best albums of the last quarter century, and again in 2013, the magazine listed Purple Rain at #2 of the greatest albums in recorded history - ever. 4) Only Michael Jackson's "Thriller" beat out Purple Rain in Rolling Stone's best ever and same in Slant Magazine. 5) Ultra conservative TIME Magazine names Purple Rain as the 15th greatest album of all time.
Please see other awards and memorabilia from my father's estate listed at the following link. However, when these items sell off, I add more - as he left in excess of 5,000 individual items from his 50 years in the music industry:
