Rare Large Original 1945 WWII Souvenir Map, "BATTLE OF THE VOSGES MOUNTAINS, 100th INFANTRY DIVISION" in the European Theater of OperationsDESCRIPTION:
Very large, very unusual souvenir WWII map. SCANS SHOW ALL. This is a great map, 1 of 5, that was put out in August 1945 FOR THE MEMBERS OF THE 100TH INFANTRY. Records IN DETAIL their operations across France and Germany from November 1, 1944 through May 11, 1945 and the end of the war. Shows the movements of the Division, broken down for the various supporting units as shown. This map shows the path of the campaign as well as the specific details and operations along the way.
This map covers the specific details and movements of THE BATTLE OF THE VOSGES MOUNTAINS in France in November 1944.
This came with a letter issued on Aug. 8, 1945, sent by Maj. Gen. W.A. Burgess, Commander of the 100th Infantry Division. Describes the maps and their intention, and the hope that they will be of interest to the members of the division....and that they may form the basis for further and more detailed study until a more comprehensive narrative is available. I will send a copy of this original letter to the buyer of each map.
This was the second map of the series, that could be put on the wall of one of the 100th veterans. IT HAS BEEN 75 YEARS SINCE THEY WERE ISSUED, AND THE NUMBER THAT EXIST IS OBVIOUSLY SMALL. The ones that were issued obviously took a lot of abuse and wear and did not survive. This one was obviously kept as souvenir, accounting for its survival in such nice condition. IT IS
IN EXCELLENT CONDITION OVERALL, with only 2 small splits on the folds (could easily be repaired on the back if desired). IT MAKES A GREAT DISPLAY ITEM, ESPECIALLY FOR ENTHUSIASTS OF THE 100th DIVISION OR THE EUROPEAN THEATER. The maps read like a history book. The detail is that great. PLUS, MAKES A GREAT DECORATIVE ITEM.
Large size, measuring about 22" x 26". Clean and in excellent condition overall. The
paper is crisp and not worn. Scale of the map is 1 to 100,000.
I have never seen something original like this before!! GREAT ITEMS, FROM A VERY ACTIVE INFANTRY OUTFIT, ISSUED JUST 3 MONTHS AFTER THE WAR ENDED.
You are buying the second map in the series of 5. The other 4 are also listed on my ebay site, and I encourage you to check them out as well.
