Description
Up for bid is a grouping of items belonging to a named P-51 fighter pilot from the Blue Nose Bastards of Bodney. He served with the 487th
FS, 352
nd
FG during the war. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster and the Air Medal with 4 Oak Clusters, as well as the Distuingished Unit Badge. He was overseas for 11 months and 30 days, and according to paperwork flew 121 sorties with over 300 hours combat time. There are some claims about several aircraft being destroyed, but I cannot find that information anywhere, except the 1 Ju-52 is credited to him for sure. The awards are backed up by the discharge sheet however.
Included in the group there are several documents and papers, some are training and after coming home, but there are some also from his time with the 352
nd
FG. There is a nice photo of him with his P-51 (B model, clearly shows the nice Blue nose). There is a very large portrait of him. A newspaper article with photo explaining some of his exploits. There are khaki cloth overseas bars and silver wings. There is a leather wallet, flight wings marked Sterling, A.E. Co. Utica NY, an ID bracelet that has his name and serial number of the front and on the back is ABS to GLB 11-3-43. Patch, some other uniform insignia as well. A lighter and chain with some markings on it, a money clip from Germany, a small escape compass, and some coins which look to be almost scratched off the faces a bit. I believe they are German (Koning on one). All of the smaller pieces came in a black plastic type cannister which is included.
