    Description

Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy in THE MUSIC BOX
(Hal Roach, 1932). One of Laurel & Hardy’s most celebrated comedies, this one won the very first Academy Award for “best short subject.” Stan and Ollie are courteous but clumsy moving men, carrying a player piano up a long, lo-o-o-ong flight of stairs. It takes the entire first half of the film to accomplish this, given Laurel & Hardy’s usual aptitude, and the second half has them trying to install the piano. None of this is easy, as our heroes get into everyone’s way, and even into each other’s way. At last the piano is unpacked, and the piano roll plays a medley of patriotic songs, with Stan and Ollie dancing along. Angry householder
    Billy Gilbert
arrives just in time to see the wreckage our heroes have created, but the householder’s wife
    Gladys Gale
sets things right. Keep your eye on Gladys while she’s resting her head on Billy’s shoulders: Billy is chewing so much scenery that he’s making her head bounce up and down (see screen shot #22) and she can barely keep from laughing! This is a prime example of Laurel & Hardy slapstick, and a great curtain-raiser for your next movie show. Running time: 29 minutes.
